Flight Plans

Flight Plan meetings took place this week, and subject selection is now officially open.

With more than 90 courses on offer across the year, it is worth taking the time to get the choices right. The aim is to balance trying something new with subjects that support your student's Graduate and post-school pathways. Spark a fresh interest 

If you have not yet completed subject selection, please do so as soon as you can. Timing does not affect whether a student gets into a class. Our system works out the most equitable way to distribute places, so submitting early gives no advantage. It does mean the reserve line needs careful thought, as there is always a real chance your student will be placed in it.

We encourage you to have a good conversation with your student about these choices, as they are an important part of the Exploration Phase.

Subject Spotlight: Science of Warfare 

Our Year 9 Science of Warfare course runs the standard Year 9 physics and chemistry content through the lens of military technology across history, and the results so far have been impressive.

Students began with an infographic task on blades and armour, investigating the science of metal forging and work hardening. This covered the structure of metals, how heating and cooling change their properties, and why a sword needs to be hard enough to hold an edge but flexible enough not to shatter.

Right now, the class is making and flying boomerangs, with a focus on the physics of aerofoils: lift, drag, spin and the forces that bring a good throw back to the thrower. There has been plenty of trial and error, and plenty of trips out to the oval to test the latest design tweak.

Next up is the science of fuels and explosives, looking at combustion and the energy stored in chemical bonds, before finishing with future weaponry such as lasers and directed energy systems.

It is a great example of what the Exploration Phase is for: a way into core curriculum content that makes students curious enough to dig deeper.
